Bowls In Focus : November 2011
Bowls In Focus 29 on + 50, with Tocumwal’s Mike Szabo and Matt Murphy rounding out the undefeated list with their 32-shots-up. However, while their single shot loss to the eventual winners relegated Martin and Kurta to fourth place overall, the Browns added two more wins and a further 32 shots to their tally to emerge triumphant in one of the toughest tests of man and bowls there is. But this year saw a new initiative added to the rich Plumbtec Pairs event when tournament director Bruce Agnew introduced a Monday Night Shootout – a series of five- end singles matches between 16 players – and slipped $1000 on the bar to be shared amongst the top finishers. A Calcutta auction of the combatants on the previous night also added some lively entertainment to this annual affair. The semi finals saw Brad Peck prevail against Clayton’s Michael Wilks, while Geoff Franze from East Shepparton toppled Neville Brown. Then in the Shootout final, Peck conceded to Franze when the score sat 7-1 after three, allowing the boys to retire inside for a beverage or two, while Keith Hill and Paul Cameron collected $1400 for their $70 investment at the auction. - Les Christie 2011 Plumbtec Golden Pairs at Nurmurkah Golf Bowls Club Results: 1st Neville Brown (Heathmont), Norm Brown (Ocean Grove) 18 points +101 shots, 2nd Garry Beckham, Ray McCumber (Eaglehawk) 18 +89, 3rd Barrie Lester (Moonee Ponds), Scott Mortimer (Melbourne) 17 + 88, 4th Brad Martin (Clayton), Matt Kurta (Alma) 16 +104, 5th Dylan Fisher (Melbourne), Mathew Rennex (Altona) 16 +71, 6th Todd Simmons (Melbourne), Brad Peck (Altona) 15 +148, 7th Ian Ewing (Lalor), Ben Loughlin (Altona) 15 +109, 8th Michael Wilks (Clayton), Brett Foley (Shepparton Golf) 14 +87, 9th Justin Short, David Daws (Moonee Valley) 14 +74, 10th Garry Ball, Chris Ball (Moonee Ponds) 14 +72. • Above: Garry Beckham from Eaglehawk finished in second-place with clubmate Ray McCumber. • Right: Moonee Ponds great Barrie Lester was at his seductive best over the three days.
