Bowls In Focus : November 2011
24 Bowls In Focus So much for the daggy long white dresses, hosiery and hats worn by the ‘White Leghorns’ of yesteryear. Meet three stunning Generation Xers who are anything but daggy, while apart from being glamorous both on and off the green, these gorgeous leggy blondes can really play! What’s more, they’re even more formidable when they join forces in team events. Donna Clarke from Shepparton Park thrilled everyone in the Goulburn Valley during the 2010 Australian Open Championships when she knocked off several big names on route to the last sixteen where her gallant run ended at the hands of Tasmania’s Debra Lee. What made Donna’s performance so meritorious was the knowledge that she had taken a year off work to practice and prepare herself for the Open, and the results were there for all to see. The quiet achiever of this trio is Veronica Kelly from City of Echuca, whose consistent play over the past few seasons was rewarded last year when she gained a place in the ladies state squad. Many good judges suggest she can’t be far off a call-up to the representative side. However, in the meantime she needs to continue placing strong performance in front of the selectors, while in her spare time Veronica will be offering top service and advice to her customers as co-proprietor of the Riverina Bowls store in Echuca. Last month we read about reigning state singles champion Melissa Larcombe and her rapid rise to stardom. Also from the City of Echuca club, Melissa, who doubles as club coach, reached the pinnacle shortly after her story appeared when she was selected to represent the state in a test series against ACT at Wangaratta this month. No doubt the effervescent Melissa, a former cricketing whiz and game show record winner, will give a good account of herself in the distinctive navy and white Victorian uniform, while in this pictorial spread she looks simply stunning in pure white. - David Allen Special Feature Blonde Ambition Melissa Donna Veronica • Dresses provided by Ebony Rose Boutique, Echuca • Bowls outfits courtesy of Riverina Bowls, Echuca
