Bowls In Focus : November 2011
Bowls In Focus 7 are proud to sponsor the Dot Jenkinson Bowls Tournament connecting people living in Loddon Mallee and promoting active lifestyles www.annecto.org.au T. (03) 5021 5456 on the great Dot and her Hall of Fame induction - it was fantastic to see the petite Joy O’Riley, who was Dot’s faithful sidekick in so many of her wonderful accomplishments, in the mix as one of the top qualifiers. Sadly, Joy and partner Aileen Mill from Irymple, lost a close quarter final play- off to 2006 winners Lynda Inglis from City Colac and Cobden’s Elaine Harrison. Inglis and Harrison had eclipsed Rutherglen’s Jan Fisher and Jan Widdop in the earlier elimination final, while two other former winners faced each other in the same round when Keilor’s Ann O’Brien and inaugural winner Joan Beckham from Donald Golf won against defending champions Anne-Maree Clarke and Sandra Bourn from Irymple. However, O’Brien and Beckham, the top qualifiers with 73-shots- up at the Workingman’s club, exited the event after a close tussle with South Australians Betty Joeschke and Gloria Burns from Barmera in the quarter finals. But it was Holt and McDermott who put an end to the run at a second DJ victory for Inglis and Harrison in the semi finals, having defeated Glen Waverley’s Audrey Hele and Lalor’s Gayle Edwards in the quarter finals, and Euston’s Shirley Pupillo and Thelma Hicks from Workers in the elimination round. The eventual winners reached the main event after winning an all-South Australian semi final clash against Joeschke and Burns, having disposed of Kangaroo Flat’s Alison Ferguson and Maureen Holland from Bendigo East in the previous round. With the on-green component finished, the competitors then concentrated their efforts on one of the DJ’s other attractions, its famed fancy dress presentation cabaret. This shindig is the third girls night out of the event, with Wednesday night’s ‘Meet and Greet’ for a sausage sizzle and pancakes being a reasonably sedate opening salvo; while Thursday night sees the city’s restaurant and pub precinct reverberating to the sounds of partying bowlers out on the town, especially at the Grand Hotel’s fabulous ‘Brewery’ which was again well patronised. This year’s ‘Country & Western’ DJ cabaret in the showroom of The Edge Hotel was another kaleidoscope of colour and sound as the expansive venue housed more cowboy outfits and gals in chaps and spurs than any decent rodeo anywhere, while a brimming sense of good fun was the order of the night. Take at tip from me, these ladies really know how to let their hair down! On a personal note, my sincere thanks to the DJ tournament committee and Bowls Sunraysia for the magnificent gifts presented to me in appreciation of my support of the event over the past eleven years. To me, like so many others, being at the DJ each year is as much a part of my life as Christmas and I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. See you all next year at the 16th ‘DJ’ where the theme is to be ‘Pink’. - David Allen Turn the page to see all the fun of Dot’s Party this year 2011 Dot Jenkinson Women’s Pairs Classic at Mildura Bowls Club Qualifiers (5-game winners): At Irymple: A Clarke, S Bourn (Irymple) +49, A Hele (Glen Waverley), G Edwards (Lalor) +47, B Joeschke, G Burns (Barmera SA) +42.
