Bowls In Focus : August September 2011
Bowls In Focus 29 This month’s cover guy Aaron Wilson had to overcome a few off-green challenges on route to his victory in the prestigious Deniliquin RSL sponsored Men’s Pairs Classic in the ‘Ute Capital of the World’ last month. Firstly he needed to get to Deniliquin from Ipswich where he had finished runner-up in the Queensland Open Singles final the day before, while an eleventh hour substitute was required after his nominated partner had to withdraw at the last minute. But it seems to be no problem in the Wilson household. We’ve all read about the exploits of brothers Matthew and Nathan, who teamed with Bendigo clubmate Torie Babitsch to win the state triples during Champion’s Week at Wangaratta in April. This time it was oldest of the Wilsons – sounds like a Beach Boys reunion doesn’t it? – Cameron, a respected top side skipper at Kangaroo Flat, who answered the call. And being able to obtain connecting flights to get young Aaron to Deni in time for the off was nothing short of sheer fluke. However, for this 36th annual Classic, the time-honoured season – and socialising - opener for many red-blooded Victorian bowlers over the years, a total of 96 quality pairs went out into the elements for two days of hot competition in the cold. Allocated into 16 sections of six, the qualifying component calls for five 18- end rounds with section winners to return from the hosting Deni RSL, Mathoura and Deniliquin club greens to headquarters at Deniliquin for a series of five-end roll-offs to decide the year’s champions. It was great to see defending champions Aaron Tomkins and Brad Holland from Bendigo East back in the play-offs along with perennial favourites Lee Schraner from Brighton and Karingal’s Lyle Taberner. However, neither would progress to the final four where City Colac’s Ian Johnson – who has been to almost all previous classics – and Neil Welsh got over the line against Kyneton’s Wayne Clarke and Craig Vincent; while the Wilsons were too strong for Central Wendouree’s Eric Kosloff and David Denham. And in the main event the Wilsons were able to stave off the determined Colac combination and claim the major share of the payload. But not before young Aaron demonstrated the bravado and exquisite skills that may well take him to the top. On the first end of the final when three down, Aaron unleashed one of his trademark thunderbolts to rip all three bowls out of the head and collect a count of five. From there it was a matter of the young tyros making as few mistakes as possible to claim an imposing victory. - Les Christie Good Vibrations For Wilson Boys Competition Report FOR ALL YOUR BOWLING NEEDS SUPPLIERS OF ALL MAJOR BRANDS: SHOP 4, 152 BELLARINE HWY NEWCOMB VIC 3219 (cnr Coppards Road) Ph.03 5248 0856 Fax 035248 1526 • HENSELITE • TAYLORS • DRAKES PRIDE • GREENMASTER • DOMINO • CATHEAD AND MANY MORE DEMO BOWLS AVAILABLE TO TRY BEFORE YOU BUY Pop in and meet the new owners Gary and Ann Border Bowls Shop Little shop...
