Bowls In Focus : June July 2011
Bowls In Focus 37 resentative Barbara White presented a Super Veteran badge to Vera Kent (Traralgon) then made the presenta- tion to all State event winners and runners up. Likewise president Fay Minter presented pennant winners with their shields and badges. Con- gratulations to all teams and players who won events this year. This was our last event before we become West Gippsland Division in the Strzlecki Region. For 62 years we have been Gippsland District having started out with just four clubs. All those years ago our ladies were travelling to pennant matches by train between Traralgon to Warragul, which made very long days with only one train to Melbourne in the morning and one back at night. Now we are 18 clubs - a lot has changed and we have grown into a big district. We have had many state event winners; state representatives have been Una Holt, Lorraine Steel and more recent- ly young Lisa Philips, councillors and a state president Joan Adams. We can be rightly proud of this District. Sadly, we are losing Mirboo North. We say goodbye to you as Gippsland and next season hello as West Gippsland. This will be the first time the men and women will come under the same name as one. Maribyrnong Valley Congratulations to Keilor’s Gloria Norman who has been made a life member of Maribyrnong Valley District Ladies Bowling Association. Gloria has been a member of Keilor since 1987and during this period has held many positions at the club. She served Group 12 as councillor from 1999–2003 and during this time was also heavily involved with the VLBA Umpires Board (of which she was chairperson) and Bowls Australia. In October 2004, Gloria ac- cepted the position of chairperson of the Deputy Umpire Panel for this association and currently holds the position. A stickler for detail, Gloria makes sure that everyone is well in- formed and encourages everyone to have a go. The preparation of study kits and the time she puts in organis- ing Markers and Umpire/Measurers Seminars and Tutorials, is way above the expectations of the position held. Gloria is very conscientious about making sure all clubs are well represented with markers and umpires at all state events and the Australian Open. Other Groups call upon her for her willing and valuable assistance; while she has person- ally attended clubs to give in-house coaching for markers to make sure they are confident in their position. Not only does Gloria make sure all clubs are prepared for the running of competitions, she is also available when needed to act as umpire and/or marker on these days. Gloria is dedicated to the game of bowls and the efficient running of the Deputy Umpire Panel at Maribyrnong Valley and gives of herself more than 100%, a very worthy candidate for Life Membership. Northern Wimmera It was one last hurrah when the NWDLBA had its final executive day recently. Henceforth we will be under the new entity of Nor th Wimmera Bowls Division. Winners on the day were Warracknabeal’s executive team of Noreen Belot, Verna Blackley, Betty Krahe and Debra Steed, who pipped the NWDLBA executive team of Alwyn Bell, Pam Hewitt, Lorraine Fuller and Isabel Davison for the major trophies and shield. During afternoon tea, NWDLBA secretary Isabel Davison presented a brief summary of the 49 years of history rekindling many proud and happy memories for everyone. Following this, all NWDLBA shields, flags, badges and memorabilia were presented to outgoing president Do- reen Taylor and will be stored in one of the district’s historical societies. Family double: Greg and Wendy Sleep both won their singles cham- pionships at the Rainbow Club this year. Congratulations to them both, also to Michael and June Sluggett along with Ron and Betty Solly who celebrated their 50th wedding an- niversaries recently. Footnote: The team at Bowls in Focus thanks outgoing scribe Rene Vivian for her diligence and enthusi- asm in coordinating news and photos from the Wimmera over the past 10 years. A job well done we’re sure you agree. Ovens & Murray The Victorian Mixed Masters Pairs was played recently at Yarrawonga and Border. The winners were Anne Miles from the host club and Bob Adams from Tocumwal, who de- feated last year’s champions Melissa Roberts from City of Echuca and Moama’s Vern Rehe in a wonderful final. Congratulations to Lauris Gardner who was recently presented with life membership of Milawa Bowls Club by Ovens & Murray president Lola Clarke. Lauris joined the club in 1980 and over the years has been a very active member. She served 10 years as secretary, played over 200 games of pennant and has been club champion twice. Sunraysia Contrary to some mischievous rumours that have be doing the rounds, the popular Dot Jenkinson Ladies Pairs Classic at Mildura and surrounding Sunraysia bowls clubs is definitely on. With this year’s theme of ‘Country & Western’ this prestigious event will be conducted on 13-14 Oc- tober and entries should be directed to Marj Jolley on (03) 5027 3371. The people of Sunraysia look for- ward to extending an open-armed welcome to all visiting bowlers and friends as they have over the past 14 years. West Wimmera Congratulations to Dimboola’s Maureen Lehmann winner of West Wimmera’s singles title, and to Doro- thy Johnson from Goroke on her fine performance in being runner-up. • West Wimmera singles winner Maureen Lehmann from Dimboola with association president Glenda Tink. • Keilor’s Gloria Norman is bestowed with life membership of the Maribyrnong Valley Asssociation by Group 12 BVOR Fran Reid. • Yallourn’s Joyce Wardley partnered Joanne Martin into equal third in the recent state pairs at her club. • It’s a family double for Rainbow’s Greg and Wendy Sleep who both won their club singles championships.
