Bowls In Focus : March April 2011
Bowls In Focus 45 Central Murray The pennant finals were completed despite rain, thunder and lightning and the transference of the game to Finley caused through the flooding of Cobram’s greens. Numurkah Golf took out both Divison1 and Division 2 pennant flags from Barooga Sports in a game marred by weather interruptions. Champion of champions was also finalised when Kerry Scott (Nathalia) defeated Marlene Bartley (Numurkah Golf). In the pairs, Kay Beare and Ruth Woods (Barooga Sports) were triumphant. We wish them well in their future matches. The State Fours played at Numurkah was also interrupted by the weather, this time the heat rule. The final was won by Cobram’s Caroline Reilly from Nathalia’s Rita Sullivan 31-11. Congratulations to all on some wonderful bowling. Far Western Portland RSL Memorial recently honoured long-time member Norma Amor with life membership. Norma joined the club in 1989, was lady president for three terms, treasurer for three terms as well as serving on the match and selection committees. Norma has also served on the club’s board of management since its inception 14 years ago. Her dedication has been and still is outstanding. Norma and husband Bill, who is also a life member, recently celebrated their diamond-wedding anniversary. Congratulations and orchids to you Norma. Gippsland The Group 10 final of the champion of champions and the state pairs were held at Yallourn last month and we witnessed some superb bowling. In the champion of champions, Pat Hammond from Warragul lost her semi final but she can hold her head high after playing very well. Pat is a relative newcomer to the game and has only been playing for five years. In the state pairs Joanne Martin and Joyce Wardley from Yallourn won the semi final then went on to win the final in fine style. Congratulations ladies and good luck and good bowling in the state finals. Goulburn Valley Well, what a year it has been for Jean Sprague of Rushworth who recently won the Goulburn Valley champion of champions; which makes her a double singles winner this year, well done Jean. The runner up this year was Mary Jeffery of East Shepparton, a very good event all around with quality bowling from all players. The GVDLBA fours this year was won by Jean Roulston, Shirley Sinclair, Pam McGurgan and Lorraine Vamos in a very tight match against Dianne Hands, Kathy Dudley, Brenda Landy and Kate Bush from Shepparton Park. Again many thanks to Shepparton Park for the use of their covered facilities, we would not have been able to run both these events without them this extraordinary wet year. We are all in high gear with preparations for the country carnival, looking forward to meeting a lot of readers this year. North Eastern The pennant final for North Eastern was held at Yackandandah Bowling Club and it was a nostalgic day as this is the last time we will play as North Eastern, next season we join Ovens & Murray to become the Ovens & Murray Region. Wodonga Blue won when they defeated SS&A Wodonga Gold. Congratulations to Jude Bartel (Kiewa Valley) who won the champions of champions at Yackandandah when she defeated Jenny Deas from Rutherglen. Ovens & Murray The final of the Ovens & Murray champion of champions was played at St James Bowls Club and resulted in a win for Joy Johnson (Yarrawonga & Border Golf) with Lorraine Close from Corowa Services being runner-up. With a weather forecast of high temperatures for the day of our pennant final to be played at Wangaratta, it was decided to have an early start, so early in fact that the Corowa Services team arrived at the venue looking absolutely splendid, and still in their night attire, fluffy slippers included! Pennant winners for season 2010- 2011: Div 1: Yarrawonga & Border Golf 1, Div 2: Benalla 2, Div 3: Corowa Services 3 and Div 4 Wangaratta 2. Congratulations to Ovens & Murray president Lola Clarke and husband Stan who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary recently. Peninsula The Peninsula champion of champions finals were played in pretty dismal weather conditions which was disappointing for everyone. In the semi finals Anne Payne (Frankston RSL) played Joy Thomson (Karingal) and won in a very tight game 25-22. The corresponding semi between Ellen Conway (Yamala Park) and Fran Leishman (Mt. Eliza) was also thrilling game, with Fran getting up to win 25-24 . The final was played in more pleasant conditions and it was Anne Payne going down to the wire with Fran Leishman. In a thrilling last end Fran again won by one shot. All three games were played in good spirit. We congratulate all the ladies for putting on such a wonderful performance of bowling in these events and wish Fran good bowling in her future matches. The final of the State fours saw the Somerville team of Betty Adkins, Gwynelda Ivers, Minnie Lamb and Chris Garner prevail over City of Frankston’s Joan Alden, Barbara Heazle, Elaine Robben and Joyce Geldard with a score of 18-15. We wish them well in the finals. • Peninsula District champion of champions runner-up Anne Payne from Frank- ston RSL with one-shot winner Fran Leishman from Mount Eliza. • The heat called for a very early start so the fun-loving Corowa Services side arrived in night attire for the pennant finals!
