Bowls In Focus 15 responding eliminator. Victoria’s other three gold medals came from its representatives in the wonderful Bowlers With Dis- abilities competition. Blind bowler Tony Scott prevailed over South Australian Dennis Wormald 14-3 9 -7; Josh Barry claimed yet another title by defeating Queenslander Bernie Wolland in the AAWD final 9-4 10-1; and Ross Brown overcame SA’s Michael Lowrie 3-8 8-4 4-3 to win gold in the men’s AUSRAPID category. World number one Leif Selby became the first dual Open singles champion when he defeated New Zealander Shannon McIlroy in the men’s singles final. The big New South Welshman previ- ously won the title at Darebin in 2008, before the championships traveled to the Goulburn Valley for its two-year country retreat. From the original draw of 128 qualifiers, five Victorians reached the last 16; Barrie Lester, who lost to Selby in a tiebreaker; Mulgrave Country Club’s John Leitch, who defeated Mark Berghofer in a tiebreaker; likewise Lee Schraner against Queenslander Paul Jopson in straight sets; and veteran great Dennis Arthur from Queenscliff, who lost to young Essendon hard-charger Aaron Wilson in straight sets.
