Bowls In Focus : February 2011
Bowls In Focus 29 Victorian Seniors Festival 2011 The Victorian Seniors Festival now in its 30th year, is a high-profile Government managed event that takes place in early October each year. The festival features more than a thousand free and low-cost events and activities for seniors across Victoria ranging from concerts and fine arts to bushwalking and bowls. The Victorian Seniors Festival offers bowls clubs a fantastic opportunity to attract new members and cater to a specific demographical segment on a scheduled day; it provides the perfect platform for seniors who would like to try or take up bowls in the future. This year’s Festival dates are yet to be announced, but I anticipate that it will be 2-9 October. Last year participating clubs had the opportunity to host their event or any day of the Festival, which proved to be very successful, with a total of 55 clubs participating in one of the greatest celebrations that Bowls Victoria has been part of. Every year the Festival gets bigger and better, and this year it promises to be a wonderful celebration of Victoria’s seniors. As a result I would encourage all clubs that wish to take part in the 2011 Seniors Festival, to discuss the event to the club support or event committee as soon as possible. Bowls Victoria is required to submit all event details to the Victorian Seniors Festival event team by 9 May 2011. Therefore, can I ask all those clubs that wish to take part in the 2011 Victoria’s Seniors Festival to please submit an expression of interest in writing to Kate Benton by 4 April 2011. Expressions of interest can be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org or by mail to Bowls Victoria, Bowlers House, PO Box 6080, Hawthorn West Vic 3122. In 2010 Bowls Victoria joined forces with the Vic- torian Seniors Festival and beyondblue to host a joint initiative. This initiative was acknowledged by beyond- blue and the Victorian Senior Festival by providing each participating bowls club with a $100 sponsorship. This sponsorship proved to be very useful in helping cover each clubs financial cost of running their event. Bowls Victoria is currently discussing the possibility of hosting a similar joint initiative in 2011 with the Vic- torian Seniors Festival management team; this would again enable Bowls Victoria to offer all participating clubs with some type of monetary sponsorship. We will be again offering all clubs that register for this fabulous event with the opportunity to promote their clubs details on the Victorian Bowls website. The event will also be published in the 2011 Victorian Seniors Festival Guide, which will be made available at all Coles stores throughout Victoria leading up to the event. Bowls Victoria is a strong supporter of the Victorian Seniors Festival and strongly encourages all participat- ing clubs to embrace this fantastic event. Seniors are the foundation of many bowls clubs and we welcome any new participants who are thinking of taking up our great sport with open arms. Special Projects Special Projects Kate McLauchlan
