Bowls In Focus : February 2011
26 Bowls In Focus Umpires Umpires Carolyn McIntyre The powerhouse Clayton combination of Todd Simmons, Dylan Benwell and Dylan Fisher cruised to victory in the recent Ray White Real Estate Summer Triples Invitational at Somerville Bowls Club. After completing the five 18-end qualifying rounds over two days as one of three undefeated teams from a full compliment of 28 entries, the Clayton men were far too accomplished for their opposition in the finals. In the much-anticipated main event, they outplayed the composite line-up of Brighton’s Lee Schraner and his former Karingal clubmates Phil Ashman and Lyle Taberner to snare the major share of the $5000 prize pool. An excellent crowd packed into every vantage point of the Somerville complex to witness the match-up of skippers Simmons and Schraner, who have both represented Australia at home and abroad, and none would be disappointed. However, it was Simmons, with two magnificent draw shots to within five centimeters when two down on the fourth of five play-off ends, who took the points. In the earlier semi final against the host club’s Ian Bramwell, Jay Tootell and Peter Nicholls, the Clayton champion demonstrated his power game as well, when he ripped the opposition’s two close counters out of the head with a sizzling drive to count three on the first end and set the victory train in motion. On an adjacent rink Schraner, Ashman and Taberner, who amassed 81 shots-up to be top qualifiers from their five rounds, had too many guns for another Somerville trio, Scott Guymer, John Stephens and Justin Elliott. The four semi finalists topped the leaders board after day one’s three rounds, with the composite side of Somerville star Michael Stanley and his Dromana pals Andy Hodgkins and John Occipinti rounding out the top five undefeated sides. However, in the following morning’s fourth round the eventual winners were well tested by the previously unbeaten locals Guymer, Stephens and Elliott when they trailed at the halfway mark. But showing their abundance of class the Clayton trio dug deep and managed to get over the line by a single shot. This result placed Stanley and Co firmly in the frame going into the last round, however, after lead- ing the combination of Somerville’s Felix Wolters- dorf, Ron Arnold and Matt Arnold for 17 of the 18 ends, Stanley’s rink conceded an untimely four on the final end to lose the round and slide from fourth to sixth in the placings. Ironically, it was a bonus for Guymer and his men who regained their spot in the top four for the all-important cash roll-offs. But from that point on it was the Todd Simmons Show as he and his two faithful sidekicks powered to a well-deserved victory. - David Allen Summer Triples Invitational at Somerville Bowls Club Top 10 Qualifiers: 1 L Schraner (Brighton), P Ashman (Karingal), L Taberner (Karingal) 10 points +81 shots; 2 T Simmons, D Benwell, D Fisher (Clayton) 10 +59; 3 I Bramwell, J Tootell, P Nicholls (Somerville) 10 +48; 4 S Guymer, J Stephens, J Elliott (Somerville) 8 +37; 5 D Di Florio, J Bolch, D Frew (Burwood) 8 +31; 6 M Stanley (Somerville), A Hodgkins (Dromana), J Occipinti (Dromana) 8 +20; 7 R Lyfield, P Elgar, B Gribbin (Cranbourne) 7 +4; 8 A Hilton (Pakenham), R Lillis (Cranbourne), D Mathers (Somerville) 6 +16; 9 J Taborsky (Karingal), L Piper (Somerville), J Cincotta (Somerville) 6 +15; 10 D Bloom (Fitzroy Victoria), P Bloom (Heathmont), G Mahoney (Fitzroy-Victoria) 6 +10.
