Bowls In Focus : January 2011
Bowls In Focus 13 to head. Barbara had the disadvantage – or maybe advantage – of carrying an injury caused by a fall the previous night. “I hit my head, it may have been a good thing, I couldn’t lift it,” she laughed at the end of the day. As expected there was no quarter given in the main event and the umpires were kept busy with the measuring tape and calipers, while this would be the last time the tactic of giving away the mat could be used. After eight ends the pair were only five apiece before Gail poured it on picking up eight over the next four ends. But she was up against a cool head and on the next end Barbara put her first and second just behind the jack and was back into the game. A two on the 14th end made up leeway and she won the 15th on a measure. At this stage it almost got too much for Barbara’s sister Gloria Meneilly, who announced she had to dive for the coffee pot. The 16th end saw Gail regain her five shot lead but Barbara forced the umpires to get the calipers out on the next to pick up single. After the 22nd Gail still had a four-shot margin but after the 27th Barbara was within one shot, in what was a jack- hugging contest. On the 28th end Gail got out of jail when she conver ted with an up-shot for a single and once again looked in control of the game. However, the next saw Barbara holding three in a tight line in front of the jack, before Gail broke up the head. But the Lalor champion put her last bowl back in to hold one behind and two in front. A fine draw shot from Gail reduced the head to one down. With Victoria’s weather turning sour the end of the match was played under threatening skies and as the rain threatened both players nestled their bowls beside the jack but Barbara got it on the measure to bring the championship to 20-all. On the deciding end Gail was comfor table with three shots lined up in perfect position and it looked all but over. This is when Barbara pulled off the dream shot to draw inside and pinch the advantage. It was the last roll of the dice for Gail’s as her final bowl went wide leaving Barbara holding her last bowl and the championship. The impressive Fay Dunn Cup will sit nicely in the bulging Withers trophy collection alongside her 1997 Victorian Champion of Champions trophy and adds further testament to a wonderful career that includes 135 quality state representations. - D i Gatehouse • Above: Championship finalists Barbara Withers and Gail Nadelman with state president Graeme Hosken. • Below: Gail Nadelman from Glen Eira McKinnon sends one away at Sebastopol.
