Bowls In Focus : October 2010
40 Bowls In Focus Bellarine Sincere condolences to the family and friends of Avis Clark (Ocean Grove) who recently passed away. Central Under a blue sky the likes of which has not been seen for several weeks, fifty-five members of the CDBLA gathered at Mansfield Bowls Club for the season’s opening day. Following a warm welcome from CDLBA presi- dent Margaret Adcock, vice president Jan McCarthy bowled the first jack and then life member Muriel Perry put down the first bowl for the season. Two games of eight ends were to be played and with the greens quite slick this caused many bowls to go into the ditch, but the ladies quickly adapted and at days end three teams had won both games. The team of Gwen Gray, Marie Evans, Marta Mueck and Denise Hogan amassed 30 points, but it was not good enough to over- come the team of Helen Barnes, Pam Abbott, Denise Storer and Marika Armstrong who won with 31. Central Murray Central Murray’s opening day was held at Barooga Sports where Bowls Victoria official representative Alice Singe warmly welcomed the 80 bowlers and CMDLBA executive to the season’s official opening. Presi- dent Elaine Blizzard rolled the first kitty while reigning Group champion Caroline Reilly bowled the first bowl of the new season. Although it was wintry conditions, it didn’t dampen the keenness of everyone out on the green where two games were played. Showing some early season form and winning on the day were Noela Thomas (Finley RS), Jeanette Liersch (Cobram), Rae Koch (Barham) and Pat Tallent also from Barham. Gippsland Congratulations to Yallourn’s Lisa Phillips, joint winner of the Junior Gippstar Award. The Gippsland Sports Academy develops the spor ts skills, and personal skills, of talented young athletes through its sports programs. Lisa’s outstanding bowling has won her selection for the Aus- tralian Youth Commonwealth Games Squad for next year’s Games on the Isle of Man. The Games place follows from her successful representation of Australia in the Trans-Tasman Test against New Zealand, where Lisa was one of the most successful play- ers, winning all her singles matches in the series. Since this award Lisa has enjoyed a successful raid during winter up Nor th winning the Queensland Open Singles and the Junior Golden Nug- get at Tweed Heads. She is heading into the new season in fine form and we wish her all the best at her new club at Richmond Union. Wintry conditions did not allay the opening of the new season at Traralgon Bowls Club where GDLBA president Fay Minter welcomed Bowls Victoria official representative Bar- bara White, MGBA president Norm Forbes and secretary Tony Colwell, GDLBA secretary Nancy Oliver, life member Lorna Moule together with present and past members. Following the toasts, BVOR Barbara gave us some insight of the latest develop- ments at Bowls Victoria. Alas, the rain continued so no bowls for the eager beavers, but Fay declared the season open as we had a very nice afternoon and enjoyed the entertainment pro- vided by Traralgon ladies Eve, Betty and Gwen. Well done girls Sincere condolences to the fam- ily and friends of Joyce Cosaton (Drouin) and Eileen Keating (Yallourn North) who recently passed away, also to Gloria Draper and family (Yal- lourn North) on the passing of Jack. Goulburn Valley Our new season started with the opening at Tatura. Great attendance, but due to rainy weather it was held inside though it didn’t stop us from having fun anyway. Our official guest was Steven Fuller - Commonwealth Bank financial planner from Bendigo - who handed us a sponsorship cheque for our country carnival to be held in April next year. Very much ap- preciated by everyone. If you haven’t got your entries in yet, don’t forget to get in contact with Jennifer Cole as soon as possible – Jennifer’s number again 5852 2842. We are all looking forward to a brilliant bowling season and wish everyone all the best.
