Well after the last season’s final magazine was published the irrepressible Clayton ladies side put the finishing touches to an amazing 2009-10 cam- paign at Southern Indoor Bowls Club by claiming vic- tory in the annual Local Stars Challenge tournament. Since 2002 this Challenge has been presented on the Hawthorn Road carpet where all section winners from the VLBA A1 metropolitan pennant season and selected country pennant champions have been invited to compete in the bustling one-day medley. This time around it was the undisputed metro and state pennant champions who held the prestigious Fay Dunn Cup aloft after the eight rounds of spirited competition. However, it took a swipe from Lady Luck’s hand to propel the Wisterias onto the rostrum. Going into the final round of singles and fours the plucky Werribee RSL side had all the momentum and sat one win ahead of both Glenroy and Clayton. But in an unfortunate finale the Werribee quartet lost against Geelong Cement by two, while Jenny Parker, their singles representative, went down by a single shot to Glenroy’s Nicole Shortis in an entertaining encounter. Further down the green Clayton’s four of Mary-Anne Spizer, Jan Loyd, Anne Pellas and Sandra Mueller were one down on the card and three down on the head against their Glen Eira McKinnon opponents, with skipper Spizer’s final delivery of the day to come. However, a brilliantly crafted trail shot saw the Clayton side pick up three shots to galvanise their win and overall victory for the Wisterias. Clayton’s winning line-up was Joyce Lindores (singles) 3 wins 1 draw; Evelyn Martin and Lorraine Burke (pairs) 3 wins; Paula Wood, Robyn Larkin and Sue Ravaillion (triples) 3 wins; along with the fours combination of Spizer, Loyd, Pellas and Mueller who won two matches. The Glenroy side comprised Nicole Shortis (singles); Jennifer Salmon and Judy Davey (pairs); Wisterias Into Victory Lane • Above: The great Clayton Wisterias team with tournament director Fay Dunn after their victory at Southern Indoor. • Below Left: Nicole Shortis from Glenroy claimed the singles award. • Left: Jennifer Salmon and Judy Davey from the Glens topped the pairs table. • Bottom: Werribee RSL’s Marg Allen, Joan Beavis and Lyn Milledge won the triples. • Opposite Page: Top four was Ashburton’s Dawn Goldsack, Pam Brown, Adelaide Toward and Liz Kortum.
