On excellent greens, under perfect weather condi- tions, and in an entertaining and engrossing game, Rehe and Roberts combined well to hold off the many challenges thrown at them by the persistent runners-up Barry and Judy Cosgrove from Tocumwal. The winners got away to a flying start and after only eight of the 18 ends had shot out to a 13-1 lead. Roberts was leading superbly and in doing so set up many ends for Rehe to show his drawing prowess and finish off his partner’s good work. On the 10th end, the Cosgroves picked up two shots when Barry drew three immaculate length bowls in a row, only to see their opponents come back with equally precision bowls that must have been heart- breaking at the time with the scores at 17-3 in favour of the Moama duo. Then on the next, when four down at the head, Cosgrove drew a beauty with his last bowl to take shot and reduce the margin by one. What followed was a see-sawing display over the next three ends, first one team, then the other, drew absolute shots to see the scoreline 17-6 to Roberts and Rehe. On the 14th end, magnificent draw bowling by both teams was probably the point where the match really broke open - alternate bowls from both sides took absolute shot five times. But after initially looking at a likely score of four to keep the Cosgroves in contention, defensive brilliant bowling by Rehe kept the opposition down to only one shot, and the margin still 10 at 17-7 . Regardless of the scoreboard, this was truly a battle royal as the eventual winners continued to apply pres- sure on their respective opponents. With only two ends to play and 13 down, it was surely a daunting task for Cosgroves to make up - but they never gave up. Judy lifted to match Roberts and Barry went head to head with Rehe as they tried valiantly but unsuccessfully to bridge the gap. But the ultimate winners, especially Rehe, had all the answers and at the final bell the scoreboard sat at 23-12 . The result was testament to the drawing and conversion strengths of the winners, but not how close many of the heads were, and how an inch or two in weight variation here and there, may well have seen a closer if not different result. A large number of bowlers and spectators attended the Yarrawonga & Border Golf Bowling Greens, to witness the final and the high standard of lawn bowling displayed by both teams, especially the winners Verne Rehe and Melissa Roberts, who fully deserved to be recognised as winners of the 2010 Victorian Country Master Mixed Pairs. - Peter Belliss Victorian Country Master Mixed Pairs Championship at Yarrawonga & Border Golf Club Quarter finals: I Lewis (Corowa Services), J Wheeler (ClubMulwala) d T Williams, R Hooper (Benalla) 16-7, B Cosgrove, J Cosgrove (Tocumwal) d B Brennan, M Brennan (Rochester) 16-10, V Rehe, M Roberts (Moama) d B O’Rourke, J Dosser (Benalla) 18-11, V Toohey, G Toohey (Barooga Sports) d R Albert, B McDonald (Yarrawonga) 17-11.
