Presented each August on the Tweed Heads indoor stadium as a precursor to the world-famous Golden Nugget Prestige Singles, this blue ribbon event features an invited field of sixteen under-18 boys and girls from all across Australia. Phillips defeated arch-rival and Australian teammate Carly Griffiths from Queensland 25-16 in the final. Griffiths, from the Pine Rivers club near Brisbane, is the reigning dual national junior singles champion but had no answer to the pint- sized Phillips once she hit her straps after the scores were locked at 12-apiece. Earlier in the day the 17-year-old Victorian junior titleholder outgunned South Australian state representative Breeanna Dickson 21-16 in the quarter finals then powered her way into the main event with a 21-14 win over an- other Croweater Danielle Fuss. Phillips was top qualifier with her three wins and 46 shots-up return on the first day, while boys defending champion Dylan Fisher from Clayton also occupied the top spot with his unbeaten run and 37 shots-up. However, Fisher encountered Dapto’s Sean Mawdsley in the quarter finals on the morning of day two. It was Mawdsley who lost out to Fisher in last year’s sensational final on the Tweed Heads carpet, but on this occasion the young New South Welshman turned the tables winning 21-16. This result, backed up by a superb 21-12 semi final win over SA’s Matt Northcott, catapulted Mawdsley to hot favouritism in the final. But it was not to be after Yamba’s Jamie Eichorn unleashed a superb display of shotmaking to relegate Mawdsley to second place again. Ironically it would be successive runner-up finishes for Griffiths also, having lost last year’s final to her older sister Shahn. - David Allen • Junior Golden Nugget champions Lisa Phillips and Jamie Eichorn.
