Bowls In Focus : June July 2010
Bowls In Focus 21 (Irymple) and Thelma Hicks (Mildura Workingmans) collected a count of five from Group 1's Marj Har- rick (Chalambar), Jan Ellsworth (Ararat VRI), Mar- garet Robson (Chalambar) and Colleen Wilkinson (Landsborough) to amass an 11-shot purge across the green and victory by 10. In the corresponding semi final Central Victoria (Group 6), who were chasing a third straight win in this event, jumped to an early lead against High Plains (Group 7). Leading the charge was the rink of Sandra Connolly (Moama), Merilyn Rehe (Moama), Phyllis Thompson (Rochester) and Margaret Stewart (Rochester) who established an 11-0 lead against Group 7's Margaret Bates (Kiewa Valley), Chris Flanagan (Rutherglen), Jan Fisher (Rutherglen) and Maisie Harvey (Wodonga) after just four ends. But the High Plains side regrouped to finish the four 15-end rubbers with a nine-shot win in a fine team effort. The rink of Joy Johnson (Yarrawonga & Border Golf), Jude Bartel (Kiewa Valley), Tessa Ward (Nathalia) and Eileen Ide (Corowa) won by four against Group 6's Margaret Bampton (Bendigo East), Patti Pain (Golden Square), Heather McLeod (Golden Square) and Judy Eddy (Golden Square), while Anne Miles (Yarrawonga & Border Golf), Laureen Smith (Mulwala), Kay Smith (Mulwala) and Lorraine Klose (Corowa) gained a three-shot win over Dawn Jennings (Kangaroo Flat), Jean Belt (Bendigo Golf), Yvonne Boyd (Eaglehawk) and Gwen Waegeli (Kangaroo Flat). Group 7's other winning rink, skipped by the impressive Faye Gibbs from Berrigan comprised Caroline Reilly (Cobram), Elaine Blizzard (Barooga) and Glenys Walker (Cobram) clinched victory by four shots against the great Amy Roberts from Korong Vale, Thelma Moresi (Boort), Roma Cain (Boort) and Jeannie Grylls (Wycheproof). It had been three years since the state's best players last converged on the Swan Hill region to compete in the championship and clearly the ladies were delighted to be back. Originally conducted in 2005 and again in 2007, this biennial sides championship and the partici- pants who reckon it's fantastic, had to wait patiently to regroup after the VLBA Centenary Carnival was added to the curriculum in 2008. Even a plague of locusts and a day or two of overcast weather failed to dampen the enthusiasm of representative sides from sixteen Groups from around Victoria. The sight of cars arriving from all points of the compass for practice the day prior, with windscreens and radiator grilles caked by squashed grasshoppers was commonplace, as were the smiles of the new arrivals who enjoy this traditional event and its social whirl. On the first day, in front of extremely good-sized crowds at the Swan Hill and Murray Downs clubs, four sections of four teams went out in search of a berth in the semi finals and the final, which were contested on the Murray Downs Resort greens. And after three hectic qualifying rounds it was the teams from Goldfields, Murray Mallee, Central Victoria and High Plains that graduated to the all- country final four. - David Allen Victorian Group Sides Championship at Murray Downs Country Club Section A: Rd.1: Hills Shore (9) d Monash (18) 93-41 (D Harkness 34 J Jenkins 6, S McColgan 14 J Lindores 19, C Spencer 18 R Jack 13, M Masters 27 T Flint 3), High Plains (7) d Maribyrnong Valley (12) 78-30 (A Miles 16 L Henneken 9, F Gibbs 27 J Carter 6, J Johnson 10 J Smith 9, M Bates 25 M Lang 6).
