Bowls In Focus : June July 2010
Seven'sHeaven The composite High Plains Group 7 team won an exciting 72-end final to claim the Victorian La- dies Group Sides Championship at the magnificent Murray Downs Golf Resort last month. They defeated the strong Group 5 Murray Mallee side by eight shots in this third championship pre- sented by the Murray Valley District Association. In the main event it was close going from start to finish, with the eventual winners holding sway through most of the journey. They were eight ahead at the 36-end halfway mark before the five's pulled it back to four with 20 ends remaining, and the blowtorch was fully applied with just 10 ends to play when the Murray Mallee green machine got to within one. However, over the closing stages the High Plains side, who were top qualifiers after the previous day's sectional play, kicked again to clinch a stirring victory. The eventual results saw both sides claim two rink wins; High Plains' Anne Miles from Yarrawonga & Border Golf outgunned Mildura's Judy Osborne by eleven, while Faye Gibbs from Berrigan defeated Nyah's Fay Devereaux by five. On the opposite side of the ledger Gunbower's Jan Morton clocked up an 18-14 scoreline against Kiewa Valley's Margaret Bates, while Kerang's Coral Wise carded an identi- cal result in her match with Yarrawonga & Border Golf's Joy Johnson. In the morning semi finals a huge crowd at greenside witnessed one of the most spectacular finishes seen in a bowls match for years. With one end to play by all four skippers in the eliminator between Goldfields (Group 1) and Murray Mallee (Group 5), the Group 1 side held a one-shot lead in a contest that had been a thriller from the start. However, as this contest panned out the MM quartet of skipper Jan Morton (Gunbower), Dianne Manners (Cohuna), Beryl Plier (Barham Services) and Yvonne Robinson (Cohuna) picked up two from GF's Kay Geddes (Central Wendouree), Marilyn Blake (Victoria), Ann Gull (Webbcona) and Glad Gullock (Webbcona), while Coral Wise from Kerang and her rink of Diane Gardner (Mildura), Sandra Bourne (Irymple) and Roma Opie (Leitchville) collected a single from GF's Jan Turner (Marybor- ough Highland), Margaret Davies (Dunolly), Alma Brooker (Maryborough Golf) and Norma Nitschke (Maryborough Golf). Further down the green Nyah's Fay Devereaux, skipping the Murray Downs trio of Margaret Kerr, Janice Grey and Mandy McInnes for Group 5, scored three against GF's Heather Hopkinson (Central Wendouree), Donna Robinson (Dayles- ford), Jo Best (Daylesford) and Valerie Savage (Webbcona), while the grand slam came when Murray Mallee's Judy Osborne (Mildura), Margaret Jewson (Murray Downs), Ann-Maree Clarke • Above: Berrigan's impressive Faye Gibbs skipped her Group 7 rink brilliantly in the final. • Below: High spirits for the High Plains girls after their victory at Murray Downs.
