Further across the green the Morwell side, who had celebrated a miracle win in previous day's third round to make it into the final four, were giving the Bundoora RSL team plenty of aggravation and coveted a six-shot lead coming into the 30th end. Main contributor was Des Fuller's rink, who were 14-1 up on Brian Wintrip's RSL quartet. However, Wintrip's men embarked on a rearguard action which saw them score 10 shots to one over the concluding ends, while compatriot Steve Williams, whose rink was 8-10 in arrears, joined the party collecting nine to two over the same period. Hats off to Morwell's Tony Stewart on his brilliant 21-9 victory after being tied at eight apiece after nine, although his great performance was trumped by RSL's Chris Barca who skipped his rink to a brilliant 22-5 win to ensure his club's victory in the match. In the play-off for third and fourth places Croydon defeated Morwell by two shots in a rollicking exhibition that saw the lead change frequently throughout. Main contributor to the Croydon side's success was its rink of Ray Babb, Ray Purdey, Jan Bukovsky and Malcolm McClimont, who claimed an eight-shot victory over Morwell's Tony Stewart, Lew Knowles, Bob D'Brass and Herb Kennedy. Since its inception in 2002 this championship has brought together the eight country Group pennant win- ners, and eight metropolitan section winners, for a weekend to decide who is the top Division 2 side in the state. Saturday features sectional rounds, with the four winners graduating to Sunday's semi-finals and final. Both semi finals on Sunday morn- ing were metropolitan versus country affairs with Bundoora RSL, who were undefeated in Section 1 meeting Section 3 winners Morwell, who also won their three qualifying rounds. The other semi final saw Section 2 win- ners Bendigo East facing up to Sec- tion 4 winners Croydon, both teams having earned promotion into the finals by superior shots percentage despite having lost their third round match on the first afternoon. Much interest was focussed on the third round match between Morwell and Swan Hill Racecourse, who were both unbeaten after two rounds. And in true racing parlance it was the thoroughbreds that literally fell at the last hurdle after dominating the 60- end match for most of its duration. Ironically, it was a losing Morwell rink which emerged as heroes in the Gippsland's club's finish, when skipper Tony Stewart along with Les Knowles, Bob D'Brass and Herb Kennedy, picked up a five and a two on their final ends after trailing 8-17 at 13. Likewise the Morwell rink of Darrell White, Mike Cooper, Graham Powell and David Goldsworthy recov- ered from 10-1 deficit to win 17-14 as their club claimed a two-shot victory and a place in the Sunday showdown. - David Allen • Above: The Bundy Boys prepare to party after their exciting win at Corowa. • Left: Tony Stewart from Morwell had an outstanding series at Corowa.
