Bowls In Focus : June July 2010
Bowls In Focus 9 IT is with an enormous amount of pride that I write this, my first column as President of Bowls Victoria. It is great honour that the Board of Directors has bestowed upon me and I will endeavour to repay their confidence in me over the next two years. Many thanks to all who have forwarded messages of congratulations to me at this time. The election that was conducted for the first board of Bowls Victoria created sig- nificant interest throughout the state and congratulations must be extended to our Returning Officer Peter Hanlon for a job well done in organising this very special event in the history of Bowls Victoria. Whilst some 46 clubs chose, for one reason or another, not to vote a turnout of in excess of 90% of our clubs was a good effort and reflected the interest that the election had created. The selection by the clubs of the eight successful candidates was a great result with a good diversification of skills being maintained by the eight directors. Very considerable bowls administra- tion experience is evident and how lucky can our organisation be to have a former President of World Bowls in Betty Collins OAM, acting as our Deputy President. It is going to be an interesting and very busy period over the next two years but I look forward to it with confidence. To the candidates who contested the election but were unsuccessful, thank you for the interest shown and I trust that Bowls Victoria will continue to have ac- cess to your services and that we can call upon them when required. One of my first duties as President was to receive from the former Executive Officer of the VLBA, Leonie Schulz, advice of her intended resignation effective on 2 July 2010. Leonie and her husband have decided that now is the right time for both of them to scale back their respective professional activities. It was with regret that I accepted the resignation, but in doing so I know that everybody in the bowling community will wish Leonie and Chris the best of luck in what ever they choose to do and we trust that they thoroughly enjoy doing it. Of recent times I have had the pleasure of attending functions at the Hampton Park Bowls Club and the Rosanna Bowls Club to celebrate the opening of a new synthetic surface, largely financed by the local council at Hampton Park, and a 50th Anniversary at Rosanna. Both celebrations were most enjoyable and I thank the respective clubs for their hospitality. The final major event on our 2009- 2010 calendar was conducted at Barham Services early in May when 10 clubs from throughout Victoria played off for the Divi- sion 1 Championship of State Pennant. Congratulations to all 10 clubs on making it to the play offs but special congratula- tions are extended to the Clayton Bowls Club who completed a fantastic season for their club by claiming the title for the second time in three years. Our next major event will be the elimination rounds for the Australian Indoor Singles to be played in June. Unfortunately entries are well down on previous years but I am certain that the 10 successful qualifiers who make it to Tweed Heads to represent Victoria will give a great account of themselves. Good luck to all in this event. Addendum: Literally minutes prior to this edition of Bowls In Focus going to press I had the pleasant duty of announc- ing the appointment of Peter Hanlon as Chief Executive Officer of Bowls Victoria. Peter was the incumbent executive of- ficer of the RVBA for four years prior to unification.
