Bowls In Focus : Bowls In Focus May 2010
36 Bowls In Focus Ballarat The roof was almost raised and the champagne corks were popping at Central Wendouree when all three teams celebrated premiership wins in Divisions 1, 3 and 4. The club is very proud of this historic achievement. The festivities, naturally enough, have been on-going. Division 1 won with 26 shots up; Division 3 with seven shots up and Division 4 were six shots up. It was an outstanding result and congratulations to all concerned. Bayside Beaches Black Rock held their Gala Day recently and even the heavy early rain didn't deter these ladies, and the greens were full and eventually bathed in sunshine. Bowls Victoria's official representative for Bayside Beaches Jean Lynch was on hand to present Super Veteran badges to club members Dawn Odgers and Mary Webb, both are wonderful contributors to the club. Congratulations ladies. Bellarine The ladies from the Queenscliff Bowls Club are thrilled to have won the Division 1 pennant grand final joining in the success of the men's Premier division team who won their grand final a week earlier giving the club a rare double victory. The club has now achieved the ultimate goal of all bowling clubs for season 2009-10. What an exciting place to be at the moment. There is a wide mix of age groups at the club ranging from 11 to 90 and they are especially proud of their younger ladies coming up through the ranks. Bowls hasn't stopped either; a new all-weather green will be finished shortly to enable bowls to be played throughout winter. Campaspe Valley It has been a busy few months for Campaspe Valley. The 33 ladies had a very enjoyable visit to Bendigo East for the annual group match with Bendigo, Campaspe Valley and North Central associations playing for the Thelma Oxley trophy. A great morning of bowls ensued with old friendships renewed and new ones formed. Following the two games players enjoyed a delightful lunch prepared by the Bendigo East ladies. The best team on the day was Brenda Leetham (Deniliquin), Shirley Williams (Rochester), Phyllis Thompson (Rochester) and Jeannette McDonald (Moama). Campaspe Valley has been successful in the Thelma Oxley event for several years, this time coming in second, much to the delight of the Bendigo district ladies. Results were Bendigo 22 points, Campaspe Valley 15, North Central 11. It was then on to the pennant finals with some semis and preliminary finals going down to the wire. Some won by just a single shot. Grand final results were: Division 1: Deniliquin defeated reigning champions Moama 71-65; Division 2: Moama Red defeated Rich River 92-45; Division 3: Deniliquin RSL won their first flag in 10 years defeating Rich River 50-42. Casey Even though it was a while ago, the Berwick Bowling Club's B1 pennant side had the most amazing match against Waverley Golf. As the last bowl was put down the scores on Kath Beevors rink was 28-28, Judy Turner on rink 2 was 22-22 and Jan Pearson on rink 3 was 23-23, the overall total being 73-73! Perhaps a record in metropolitan pennant? Central Congratulations to the Mansfield team of Lyn Foots (skip), Denise Storer, Belinda Snider and Enid Smith, winners of the State fours, and to Marika Armstrong (Alexandra) for her fine win in the State Over-60 singles, we wish her well in the Group final. The Mansfield side took home the Pennant Cup this season defeating top of the ladder side Seymour. The Group 8 final was held at Yea and after narrowly winning the morning final against the Central Highland's team Melton, Mansfield then took on the Goulburn Valley pennant winners Shepparton Park and in another tight match it was Shepparton Park who prevailed. Well done to all players, the many spectators were treated to some excellent bowling in both closely contested finals. Best wishes to Shepparton Park when they play off in the State finals. Central Murray The State fours were held at Finley Bowling Club on in warm and windy conditions with teams from Barooga Sports, Berrigan Sports and Finley RS competing for the title. In the semi finals Barooga Sports was too strong on the day for the Finley RS team of Nan Smith, Brigitte Krug, Roberta Ibbott and Marion Pokrovsky winning 23-15. Berrigan Sports had the bye. The final was a real nail biter that went down to the last end, however it was the team from Barooga Sports, Elaine Blizzard, Eve Saunders, Ruth Wood and Di Nye clinching the title from Berrigan Sports' Faye Gibbs, Glenys McKay, Jill Loats and Lesley Fankhauser, winning 16-12. Flinders It has been a thrilling time around the Rye club as the Division 1 and Division 2 found themselves in the local pennant grand finals, which were held in fine weather on beautifully prepared greens at the picturesque Main Ridge Bowls Club. The teams were always hopeful of performing well and it certainly turned out that way. Division 1 played against the Rosebud Club and led from start to finish with a huge final margin of 26 shots (68-42). All three teams in the side won their matches. Division 2 played the Village Glen Bowls Club and whilst fairly even for some time the Rye girls forged ahead increasing their lead to a similar massive final margin of 22 shots (63-41). Although one team lost by just 4 shots the other two had very good wins. This is the club's first Division 1 win in 23 years and the first time both sides has won flags in the same Horizons VLBA District Association News From Around The State • Central Wendouree’s Division 1,3 and 4 teams ready to celebrate their premiership wins. • Black Rock’s newly pinned Super Veterans Mary Webb and Dawn Odg- ers are fanked by club presidents Mac Langley and Jillian Ward. • Queenscliff’s Division 1 team were simply delighted with their pennant win.
