Bowls In Focus : March April 2010
Bowls In Focus 41 Vics shine in the Classic Victoria has had yet another successful Aus- tralian Bowls Classic at Shepparton Park and Mooroopna Bowling Clubs, taking out the men's singles, men's pairs and mixed pairs in the tourna- ment for bowlers with an intellectual disability, held in conjunction with the Australian Open. Josh Barry led from the front as he narrowly defeated his team mate Brendan Elliott in the final of the mens singles to add yet another gold medal to his collection. Josh has been extremely success- ful in this event in previous years but is aware the competition is rapidly getting stronger. Ross Brown joined Josh to claim the mens pairs by winning their section, and the mixed pairs gold went to the Victorian duo of Josh and team newcomer and sensation Laura Williamson - a very successful basketballer who only took to bowls three weeks prior to the tournament. The duo were taken to a tiebreaker in the final, only to see Laura draw two resting touchers to take out the tight match against the South Australian duo of Rosemary Lane and Michael Lowrie. Joanna Lomagno got the crowd excited with her Lleyton Hewitt-like celebrations throughout the tournament, displaying great leadership in guiding her new teammate Laura through their womens pairs matches, while Annette McGovern and Donna Cashin joined forces as the other Victorian womens duo and showed great improvement as the tourna- ment went on. Wayne Farmer bowled beautifully throughout the week as he took on the position of skipper with his pairs partner Brendan Elliott. Special mention needs to go out to the team emergency, Steven Nelson, whose display of team support was sensa- tional throughout the week. Bowls Victoria would like to thank Jenny Bees from VICSRAPID for all her support, the coaches Gay Jebb and Glen Baskett, along with their as- sistants Stan Jebb and Joy Jarvis, for their fantastic efforts throughout the tournament and selection days leading up to the event. Without the assistance from volunteers such as these fantastic people, programs like this would not be possible. This thank you also extends to the parents and carers for their assistance and co-operation. To the South Australian and Queensland teams who competed, congratulations on your wonderful display of sportsmanship and skill. Hopefully more states choose to get behind this fantastic initiative in the future and make it a true national event. Thank you to Bowls Australia and AUSRAPID for organising this tournament. An event such as the Australian Bowls Classic gives us the opportunity to engage public interest and awareness, and hope- fully will allow for people of all abilities to participate in this fantastic sport of ours within clubs not just throughout Victoria, but Australia. The players love the opportunity to be able to participate on such a huge stage and the specta- tors really get involved, which makes for an exciting atmosphere. With next year's Classic set to include more disability groups, it should be an exciting time for bowls. • The successful Victorian contingent at last month’s Australian Bowls Classic.
