Bowls In Focus : March April 2010
Bowls In Focus 13 apiece after the three ends. However, a masterful conversion by Wilks in the decider promoted the Clayton pair into the final. After the match Wilks could only chuckle and say, "Bowls, it's a funny game, you never know what might happen." But on the big stage, against the vastly experi- enced England combination of Stewart Airey and Mervyn King, the Clayton duo were never in the hunt on the television rink, going down in straight sets. Still, a silver medal and the $3000 runner-up purse would have gone a long way to ease the pain, especially after Wilks had blown a radiator on his way up to Shepparton. This year was the fourth in which the popular Over-60 triples has been a subsidiary event to the major Open competitions, and in a coup for the club; it was the third time a Burwood trio has emerged with the gold medal and $3000 pay cheque. After winning their way through to the final, Paul Morris, Mike Chittenden and Terry Rawlings defeated the local side of Col Watson from Mooroo- pna Golf, Shepparton Park's Frank Watson and Kevin Naylor, also from Mooroopna Golf. The Burwood veterans raced through the first set winning 15-4, but were on the receiving end in the second, losing 5-8. However, some splendid work by all three in the tiebreak ends saw them emerge victorious. "The first two years we won with Barrie Jackett and Bill Wyatt, but they weren't able to play this year," said Rawlings, with tongue firmly planted in cheek. "So I decided to give Paul and Mike a chance and look what's happened, we've come up trumps again." It had been a dramatic week of qualifying at clubs in the Bendigo region prior to the Open proper. Scorching heat matched by violent thun- derstorms and torrential rain did little to soothe hot tempers and frustration amidst claims that controversial decisions and ambiguous rulings by officials stumped aspirants in their quest for a start in the championship field. Fact is, very few, if any, emerged with genuine • Opposite page: Matt Wilson from Bendigo made it to the last 16 of the men's singles. • Above Right:Altona veteran John Hurst in action during the men's pairs. • Right: Geelong West's Zdena Spacil went out in the round of 16. • Below: England's Stewart Airey and Mervyn King prevailed in the men's pairs.
