Bowls In Focus : February 2010
Bowls In Focus 31 A New Era Well, I am starting to settle into my new position as Development Officer at Bowls Victoria and am extremely excited about the future for bowls in this state. I had the privilege of being present at the Unifi- cation meeting on 3 December 2009 at the Moonee Valley Racecourse when the RVBA and VLBA an- nounced they are to join forces and become Bowls Victoria. As I stood there listening to the announce- ment, the feeling in the room was that of great relief and satisfaction. It was as though there was this understanding that, while the history of both organisations is long and prestigious, for lawn bowls to move forward in Victoria, unification was exactly what needed to be achieved. I must admit, being a bowler myself, I did feel the hairs on the back of my neck stand up when the announcement was made. It was a humbling experience to know that I was there on such an historical day in the history of the sport in Victoria. The unification has filled me with excitement as we can now all move forward together and work as one to develop our wonderful sport. I am excited at the prospect of working with many great organisations, clubs and people to help promote lawn bowls. Volunteers are a huge part of every sport, especially at grass root level. I encourage as many of you as possible to put your hands up and offer some assistance to your clubs. Help grow memberships and encourage new people to come and play bowls. Look outside the square. Encourage and include children, people with disabilities, multicultural backgrounds, etc to get involved. Get your local communities, schools and businesses involved in any way you can. Now is the time to start to look forward! I would love to hear from people or clubs who may be interested in assisting the Develop- ment Team with various programs we plan to run throughout the year. If you are interested in assisting, or would like some more information, please contact me on 9819 0757 or 0438 523 544. Australian Bowls Classic This year the Australian Bowls Classic for per- sons with intellectual disabilities is being held between Wednesday 17th and Friday 19th Febru- ary in conjunction with the 2010 Australian Open in Shepparton and Mooroopna. The Victorian team was recently named with four men and four women set to represent their state. They are: (men) Ross Brown (Webbcona), Josh Barry (Warracknabeal), Wayne Farmer (Blackburn) and Brendan Elliott (Somerville) with Steven Nel- son from Colac named as an emergency; (women) Joanna Lomagno (Korumburra), Alison Caldwell (Morwell), Annette McGovern (Geelong RSL) and Donna Cashin (Warracknabeal). On behalf of everyone at Bowls Victoria and VICSRAPID, we wish the team every success. I encourage anyone attending the 2010 Austra- lian Open to support the Victorian team taking on their rival states and make them feel very welcome. • Somerville’s Brendan Elliott will represent Victoria in this month’s Australian Bowls Classic at Shepparton Park.
