Bowls In Focus : February 2010
16 Bowls In Focus Lanky Moonee Ponds player Richard Kopcewicz last month extolled the healing and cleans- ing properties of lawn bowls as he was accepting his $10,000 winner’s cheque at Richmond Union Bowling Club. The Premier Division draw bowler who works in local government cleaning up the environment had just finished cleaning up a string of top-quality trundlers to win the 2010 Hocking Stuart Victorian Masters Singles Championship, and then he told the gathered throng about how the sport had helped clean up his life. “ I have been fortunate with the people I have met through lawn bowls and I’m glad I changed my life from the direction I was heading down the gutter of society,” a clearly emotional Kopcewicz said. “ Now I own a property beyond the gutter and am Joe Citizen out here and playing lawn bowls and feeling life’s good at the moment,” he exclaimed to rousing cheers. “ I asked my daughter 15 years ago when I was a single parent if I could play lawn bowls. I could see her leaving the nest and having her own life and me sitting there on my own. Now I thank my daughter enormously for allowing me,” he said. Kopcewicz has been something of a journeyman in the game after starting at Fawkner and having stints at Fitzroy and West Coburg. However he be- lieves that Australian representative Mark Jacobsen had been a major influence on his transformation into a quality performer. “ Jaco was instrumental in me wanting to become a bowler again. I had got lazy, but now I have been on the green every day - even when it was really hot - preparing for this tour nament,” he said. But the new Masters champion has no ambitions beyond this triumph on Gleadell St, no sights being shifted to Australian Open glory and such.
