Bowls In Focus : December 2009
Bowls In Focus 13 We’re on-line NOW! IT seems not so long ago that our pennant season got underway and we are already more than halfway through the competition. Many clubs are positioning themselves for the vital run up to the finals and I am certain that immense interest will build as we get closer to the commencement of our finals series. November 14-20 saw the inaugural ‘Blue Round’ of pennant played throughout the state and it was pleasing to see so many clubs get behind the concept with the support of our partners in Beyond Blue. The past month has been extremely busy with interstate trips to Tasmania for the Senior State Sides (60 and Over) Round Robin, and to Canberra for a Test Series against the ACT. In Tasmania our side performed extremely well to finish in second position for the third successive year. Congratulations to Geoff Tinning, Dennis Arthur, Frank Watsford and Barrie Close on winning the team of the series and to Stan Blight and Geoff Tinning on being adjudged equal best players for Victoria. In Canberra our side was far too accomplished for the valiant but un- dermanned ACT side. Victoria won all three Test Matches with large margins and all 12 Victorian players contributed to retaining the Abe Corrall Trophy on the ninth successive occasion. Congratulations to Brenton Coad from Altona who was adjudged as Victoria’s best player of the series. These visits were closely followed by the 36th running of the very popular RVBA International Day at Maribyrnong Park Bowls Club. Con- gratulations to Max Deason and his committee on their organisation and preparation of what was to be another very successful day. However, following a week of extreme heat and humidity, the skies opened up and sent a deluge of rain across Melbourne. And despite our best efforts to get the event underway, the greens were so waterlogged that we had to curtail play before a bowl had been delivered. A Test Series against Tasmania to be played at Clayton will then follow early this month. By the time that this edition of Bowls in Focus is published the all-important vote on the unification of the RVBA and the VLBA will have been taken. Whilst I personally support strongly the concept of unification and I hope that the vote held on December 3 allows for the progression to Bowls Victoria, I clearly understand that to get a 75% vote in favour is a big ask. Irrespective of the result of the vote I would like to congratulate all members of the Joint Working Party, who have worked so diligently towards the achievement of our objective over the past two years, and to thank them for the extensive time and effort put in by all of them in endeavouring to get the message across. Congratulations to the 16 Group winners in the RVBA 60 and Over Singles and the RVBA 60 and Over Pairs and I wish all of you good bowling in the State Finals of these events to be played this month. With December now upon us our thoughts turn to Christmas and to our families. It has been a tough year for most people throughout the world and I encourage each of you to consider what action you may be able to take to ease the load on somebody who may not be as well placed as yourself. On behalf of the Board of Manage- ment I extend to you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year. I trust that you are all able to enjoy some relaxing time with families and friends over the break and that you are able to return to bowls in January fit and well.
