Bowls In Focus : November 2009
22 Bowls In Focus Gunbower’s Frank Tonn and Terry Gilmore drew on the wealth of experience gained from their many years on the tourna- ment circuit to claim top prize in last month’s $30,000 Plumbtec Golden Pairs at Numurkah Golf Bowls Club. Tonn and Gilmore lead the annual 2-bowl pairs enduro - nine games of 21-ends over three days - from go to whoa in an outstand- ing performance at the event’s three host clubs, Numurkah, Numurkah Golf and Wunghnu. They were one of four teams from the 82 entries to win all nine starts, and snatched the major cash ahead of Essendon’s David Donaldson with Ben Loughlin from Altona; Essendon’s Aaron Wilson and brother Matt from Bendigo; and the fourth placed pairing of Colin Power from Kilmore and Shepparton Park’s Rodger Bone. Another team to complete the gruelling event undefeated was the excitable Kiwi combination of Kingsbury’s Rihai Whaikawa and Jason Kiuti from Toorak, who collected eight wins and a draw to finish in fifth place outright. At the start of day three’s final three rounds, eight teams headed the leaders board with six wins from their six starts, and much interest was focussed on exactly who would survive the attrition of another tough day on the green. First six-game winner to go in round seven was former cham- pions Todd Simmons and Brad Mar tin from Clayton who were outplayed by the wily pairing of Keith Lindsay and Ray Nye from Barooga Sports. Lindsay has been a wonder- ful player in the state’s north for many years.
