Bowls In Focus : November 2009
THE most important of my com- ments for this month's report con- cern Unification. With the forthcoming vote due to be taken on 3 December 2009 by club delegates, it is extremely important that all clubs have arranged with the members of each of their VLBA and RVBA sections to meet and determine the club's decision regard- ing the vote. Many clubs have already made their decisions and I compliment them on their actions. For those who have yet to determine the decision of their members, I urge you to meet and vote accordingly. By now all clubs should have re- ceived the package with the Notice of Meeting and advice about the voting procedure, which should be of as- sistance. Your delegates need to know how you wish them to vote and as it is only a few weeks away, so decisions need to be made. The Joint Working Party believes that they have done all they can to inform club members, so we ask for your co-operation. In my first two months on the job I have been very busy visiting many clubs throughout Victoria, six in the country and four in the metropolitan area. Many of these clubs were celebrating anniver- saries and others opening days, and at each and every occasion the friendship and hospitality from these clubs has been excellent and so enjoyable. I thank them most sincerely. I was also delighted to be invited to attend the Dot Jenkinson Pairs Classic in the Sunraysia DLBA and not only saw some excellent bowling at the headquarters in Mildura, but also was taken to the other clubs where this competition was being played, Mer- bein, Red Cliffs, Irymple, Coomealla and Workingmans. The worthy win- ners were Nannette Birthisel and Val White from Wycheproof. This classic event concluded with a marvellous presentation function at the Coomeal- la Memorial Services Club. There have been 19 entries in the Under-25 State Singles Champion- ship, which was held at Werribee RSL Bowls Club on Sunday 25th October and Sunday 1st November 2009. As some of our State Squad players have emerged from our junior ranks we look forward to seeing some of these play- ers with evidence of potential advance to the elite level. On that note I offer special con- gratulations to three young ladies who have worked their way through the various VLBA junior and under-age programs, and have now earned na- tional selection in the Australian team to play NZ in the Trans-Tasman Series in Auckland next February. These are Yallourn's Lisa Phillips who has been selected in the Under-18 side, while Carla Odgers from Keilor was named in the Under-25 team. Although she is currently residing in Sydney, I congrat- ulate Samantha Shannahan, who also came through our under-age system, and was selected in the Under-25 side along with Carla. The Senior State Squad is now preparing for its first Test Series of the season to be held in the ACT from 18-20 November at the Queanbeyan Bowls Club. We wish them good luck and good bowling! This year's charity is HeartKids Victoria and is being well promoted throughout the clubs and we look forward to your continued valuable support of this season's selected charity. Many clubs are preparing for the beyondblue Pennant Round to be held from 14-20 November. An information package regarding how your club can participate has recently been sent from beyondblue to all clubs. Some suggestions have been to wear a blue scarf, dye your hair blue, wear blue jewellery or make-up, and wear a beyondblue wristband. I am sure many of you will find many imaginative ways to 'turn the rink blue'.
