Bowls In Focus : October 2009
40 Bowls In Focus IT Solutions In 2008, Bowls Australia partnered with Sporting Pulse to deliver Information Technology (IT) solu- tions to the bowls community throughout Australia. Through this exciting partnership, Victorian Bowls is gradually rolling out the free tools on offer - web- sites, competition management and databases. Websites The first phase is free websites for all clubs, districts, associations and groups. Many clubs have already taken up this offer, but you might still be wondering why you should have a club website? Given the widespread use of the internet and the huge reliance many people place on it to gather information, a website should be one of your primary advertising and communications tools. Almost all potential members below the age of 50 and many over will read a club website before phon- ing or visiting the club to enquire about membership. It’s important then to make sure the site clearly illus- trates what’s ‘in it’ for them (i.e. why they should join). The second major purpose of your website should be communicating to club members. Features such as news, a calendar of club activities, pennant team selections, results and newsletters are all great features and will ensure members visit the site regularly. This can also save a lot of mailing, paper and envelope costs for the club over time. How do you get started? The first step is for the person or people who will be creating and updating the website to sign up for myBowls at www.sporting- pulse.com/portals/mybowls. Then you can either fill out the form on our website at Club Support -> Websites and Competition Man- agement or email me the email addresses used to sign up for myBowls. These will be linked to your new website and work to create your website can begin. The system used to create and update websites is very user friendly. It’s internet-based and anyone familiar with the internet, email, Word or Excel has all the skills needed. There are plenty of bowls specific support materials available to help you along as well. Competition Management If you volunteer at district/association level outside Melbourne Metro, have you considered putting your Pennant competition online? District/Association web- sites have the capability to display your fixtures, results and ladders in the same way as Metro Pennant. Setting up the competition should take 1-2 days, then entering results is quick and easy and everyone playing in your area can view all results immediately - as early as Saturday evening! To get started follow the same steps as above. Databases The RVBA recently cut over to a Sporting Pulse membership database to record the member details supplied on the membership registration form. The VLBA will continue to use their existing membership system for an interim period, which is not linked to Sporting Pulse. A decision will be made at a later date about how the database structure can be accessed and/or updated at club and District/Association levels.
