Bowls In Focus : October 2009
Bowls In Focus 9 WELCOME back to all the holiday- makers who were able to venture to warmer climates or to seek out new and exciting places to explore, and also to those who stayed at home and en- joyed the rest and relaxation. I sincerely hope you enjoyed your winter break. Clubs are now getting back into full swing for the forthcoming pennant sea- son. Metropolitan clubs will be adjusting to the changed structure of twelve play- ers per side, which we hope will alleviate the difficulties that have caused so many forfeits. I wish you all an enjoyable season of bowling. I have enjoyed attending opening days at eight clubs to date, three of which were Group Days and two that were celebrating anniversaries. It was delightful to see so many happy faces out on the greens, despite the chilling cold winds, but, as is usual, the hospital- ity was most war ming. September was a busy but enjoyable month, as too will October be. The time is fast approaching when the VLBA and RVBA Delegates of all clubs will be asked to cast their vote with regard to the unification of both associations. Clubs need to have held the appropriate meetings for each of the sections to enable them to decide on the vote for their delegates to take to the meeting on 3 December 2009 at 1.00pm, at Moonee Valley Racecourse. Some clubs have already advised me that they have decided on their vote and I congratulate them for their initiative. The bowls website will contain up to date infor mation to keep you informed, and further infor mation will be sent to each club this month, with the relevant material regarding the vote. The Joint Working Party is working hard to ensure that you are all well infor med to make your decision. Our Coaching and Umpire Boards seminars will be conducting a number of seminars throughout the State during the season and I encourage all interested members to keep an eye out for dates. A Joint DCC’s Seminar was held at Newport on Friday 4 September 2009 to discuss the new coaching str ucture. The VLBA Umpire Board also held a DUP Seminar at Bowlers House on Monday 14 September 2009. The state junior team has been selected for the Australian Junior Cham- pionships to be held at Halekulani NSW from 28 September to 1 October 2009. We wish these girls every success and congratulate them on being chosen to represent Victoria. Last month the VLBA senior state squad was put through it paces at Se- bastopol Bowls Club near Ballarat, and although two of the team’s most experi- enced players, Judy Nardella and Joyce Lindores, were unable to participate because of illness or injury, the squad worked diligently under the watchful eye of state coach Audrey Hele. My congratulations to the seven new faces in the squad: Joanne Blake (Buckley Park), Elise Cowan (Sunbury), Michelle Dick (Sunbury), Anne Miles (Yarrawonga & Border Golf), Hailey Miller (Colac City), Claire Sanders (Yarrawonga & Border Golf) and Kay Smith (Club Mulwala). State Council and Staff celebrated VLBA Foundation day (26 September 1907) with an infor mal luncheon on Monday 28 September at the Elgin Inn in Hawthorn.
