Bowls In Focus : October 2009
8 Bowls In Focus VLBA News Around the Greens VLBA News Around the Greens VLBA News Around the Greens VLBA State Council recently an- nounced that HeartKids Victoria has been selected as the associa- tion’s official charity for the 2009- 2010 season. HeartKids is a small and very special charity solely focused on Childhood Heart Disease (CHD) - which is the greatest killer of Australian children under the age of five. Even though Childhood Heart Disease takes more lives than all other childhood diseases - twice that of all childhood cancers combined - m ost people are unaware of how prevalent and serious it is. The fact is one in 100 children born, has a life threatening heart condition. Established in 1990, HeartKids Victoria is a state-wide ser vice wor king with families from Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and the southern areas of NSW. Often families come from many parts of Australia for the specialised ser vices at the Royal Children’s Hospital. HeartKids is also an Auxiliary of the Royal Children’s Hospital and of- fers a wide range of support ser vices for these special youngsters and their families, which include emotionally supporting, advising and counselling parents, and employing experienced trained staff for these roles. They also assist family needs such as respite areas, together with accom- modation for country and interstate family members during stressful and prolonged hospital stays. HeartKids provides the Royal Children’s Hospital and Monash Medical Centre with equipment for the cardiac wards, intensive care and surgery, together with research and advocating best practice for paediat- r ic cardiology. The support given by VLBA mem- bers and clubs, will allow HeartKids to enhance their ser vices, and they cer tainly have a broad wish list of needs such as - additional round- the-clock support staff, music and play therapy, along with the provision of toys, books and games during hospital stays. The support will also assist with purchasing of blood test- ing machines for families to use at home, together with upgrading and increasing ICU and surgery monitor- ing equipment. Research is another component in need of funds; Hear tKids wants to set up a Cognitive Development Clinic, which gathers data on brain growth and neurological develop- ment for children with CHD who have undergone surgery. The use of this information from individual patients will enable parents and schools to be aware and develop appropriate remedial learning assistance.
