Bowls In Focus : August September 2009
Gerry Winters, Marshall Boydle and Keith Clarkson, while Frank Hollingsworth, Kevin Duggan and Don Western from Dromana were third. Interesting to note that three old stagers who were pretty fair trundlers in their pre-armed days, Col Burley, Tony Murray and Morrie Burke from Karingal, slipped into the placegetters at third. The concept was the brainchild of immediate past president Alby Ashley, who noticed that there were many bowlers using the revolutionary aid, but nearly all were disinclined to enter tournaments, believing they were at a disadvantage to able-bodied bowlers. Apparently IPP Alby and his rink had recently been on the receiving end of a thumping by a couple of ‘armed’ bowlers at a social outing, and, perhaps buoyed by the performance of armed star Barry Anset in the RVBA Over-60 Singles Championship, he set the wheels in motion. Things moved quickly and an event sponsor, Credit Unions of Australia, who were equally impressed with the concept, agreed to come on board. With just a short lead-time available, the event still managed to attract 78 players, many as triples and some as single entries, to match skills with their peers on the Frankston turf. Three games of 10-ends was the order of play, and at the conclusion of a fantastic day, in which only two teams remained undefeated, it was the Edithvale trio of Alan Kennedy, Harold Ritchie and Frank Baguley who claimed the event’s magnificent Ashley Shield and a major share of the prize pool. Runners-up were Cranbourne’s Arms’ is tentatively set down for April 18, and the event’s organisers are hopeful of having the inventor of the ‘Bowlers Arm’, Trevor Harker, who is now in his mid-90s and based at Portarlington, along to enjoy the fruits of his labour. - David Allen Choice of Champions Henselite congratulates CUA Battle of the Arms at City of Frankston Bowls Club 1st A Kennedy, H Ritchie, F Baguley (Edithvale) 6 points +20 shots; 2nd G Winters, M Boydle, K Clarkson (Cranbourne) 6 +18; 3rd F Hollingsworth, K Duggan, D Western (Dromana) 5 +12; 4th C Burley, T Murray, M Burke (Karingal) 5 +5.
