Bowls In Focus : August September 2009
S tate selectors from both associations recently completed the arduous task of choosing the squads from which the coming season’s Victorian interstate representative teams will be picked. Those named in the RVBA Senior Squad will have just one shot at impressing the selection panel when they participate in state trials at Moama Bowls Club over the weekend of 12-13 September. It’s a similar scenario for RVBA Under-25 Development Squad candidates who will be put through their paces over the weekend of 5-6 September at the Rich River Resort. Players named in the VLBA Senior Squad will have the first of their monthly training sessions at Sebastopol Bowls Club over the weekend of 19-20 September. Two of the players named in the RVBA Development Squad have also been invited to try out for the senior side. They are Michael Vesikko from Sunbury, a semi finalist in last year’s RVBA Champion of Champions, and Bendigo’s Aaron Wilson, who has won successive RVBA State Under-18 singles titles. In what may well be a first for state selection, a mother and son have both been named in state squads, with Clayton’s Paula Wood selected in the VLBA Senior Squad and son Tony Wood in the RVBA Development Squad.
